Why New Businesses Fail in the First Five Years

Starting a business is an exciting and ambitious journey, but for many entrepreneurs, the early years are often the toughest. Studies show that a large percentage of new businesses fail within their first five years, and understanding why can help future entrepreneurs avoid the same pitfalls.

One of the main reasons for early business failure is poor financial management. Many startups struggle with cash flow, overspending, or underestimating expenses. Without a clear financial plan or budget, it becomes difficult to sustain operations when challenges arise.

Another common issue is lack of proper market research. Some entrepreneurs launch products or services without fully understanding their target audience or competition. As a result, they fail to meet customer needs or differentiate themselves in a crowded market.

Weak marketing and branding strategies also contribute to failure. In today’s competitive world, visibility is crucial. Businesses that do not invest in effective marketing—especially online—often struggle to attract and retain customers.

Additionally, poor leadership and management can harm business growth. Without a clear vision, teamwork, and decision-making structure, even great ideas can collapse under pressure.

External factors such as economic instability, changing regulations, and market trends also play a role, but adaptability is what separates surviving businesses from failing ones.

Ultimately, success in business requires preparation, resilience, and continuous learning. Entrepreneurs who plan carefully, manage finances wisely, and adapt to change have a far greater chance of thriving beyond the crucial five-year mark.

Why Kenyan Youth Are Reluctant to Register as Voters with the IEBC

Kenya’s youth make up the majority of the country’s population, yet their participation in elections remains worryingly low. Despite numerous campaigns encouraging young people to register with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), many remain reluctant to take that crucial step. Understanding this trend requires looking deeper into the realities, frustrations, and perceptions shaping the modern Kenyan youth’s political attitude.

One of the major reasons for voter apathy among young people is disillusionment with leadership. Many youths feel that politics in Kenya is dominated by the same faces and families, leaving little room for genuine change. Election after election, promises of job creation, affordable education, and improved living standards often go unfulfilled. This cycle of disappointment has led to a growing belief that voting does not translate to meaningful transformation.

Additionally, unemployment and economic hardship have shifted young people’s focus away from politics. When daily survival becomes the main concern, political participation feels like a distant priority. Many youths also view politicians as self-serving individuals who only appear during campaigns and disappear after elections.

Another challenge is limited voter education. Some young Kenyans do not fully understand the registration process or the importance of their vote in shaping governance. The IEBC’s outreach programs sometimes fail to reach rural areas and informal settlements where youth populations are high.

Lastly, digital activism has replaced physical participation for some. Many youths prefer expressing political opinions on social media rather than queuing to register or vote.

For meaningful change, Kenya must bridge the gap between young citizens and the political system—through transparency, inclusion, and empowerment. Until the youth feel their voices truly matter, voter apathy will remain a persistent challenge.

Timing Is Everything: The Best Time for Artists to Release Music

In the ever-evolving music industry, talent and creativity are essential — but timing can make all the difference between a hit song and one that goes unnoticed. For any artist, understanding when to release music is a crucial strategy that can maximize reach, engagement, and success.

Generally, the best time to release music depends on your audience, goals, and promotional plan. However, many industry experts agree that Friday is the ideal day to drop new music. Most streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube update their playlists on Fridays, giving new releases the chance to be featured and discovered globally. Releasing on a Friday also allows fans to enjoy the music over the weekend, boosting streams and shares.

Timing within the year also matters. The first quarter (January to March) is great for building momentum, while mid-year releases (May to August) often attract high engagement during festivals and holidays. Avoid releasing during major global events or holidays unless your music aligns with the theme — otherwise, your release could get lost in the noise.

Most importantly, an artist should ensure they’ve built enough anticipation before release. Teasers, visuals, and countdowns can help create hype and ensure that fans are ready when the track drops.

Ultimately, the best time to release music is when your audience is most active and you’re fully prepared to promote it. Great timing, paired with great music, is the perfect recipe for success.
